The Most And Fewest Per Person

Raw counts mostly show which county is big. Rates tell you something else. These tables only include counties with at least 100,000 people, so a tiny county with one agent does not skew them. Population is from the Census Bureau estimate for July 1, 2023.2

Counties With No Agent Address

12 of California's 58 counties had no active bail agent with a business address there on the day we pulled the list. Those counties are Alpine, Colusa, Del Norte, Inyo, Modoc, Mono, Nevada, Plumas, Sierra, Siskiyou, Tehama and Trinity.

That does not mean nobody will help. It means a family there will likely deal with an agent from another county, and it may pay extra travel or posting costs, which the rules allow within limits.3

Big Offices And One Person Shops

The five bail brands with the most agents, counted by shared website, cover 467 agents, or 23 percent of the state's total. The ten single offices with the most agents hold 261, or 13 percent. On the other end, 596 agents, or 29 percent, are the only agent we can tie to their address. We show only a city for many of those people, because a single use address may be a home.

What Bail Company Websites Say

We read 166 California bail company websites in November 2026 and counted what each one mentions. 156 mention 24 hour service. 118 mention payment plans. 53 mention a language beyond English. Only 76 of the 2,029 agents have their exact license number printed on a company website we could read. That is why a search for the license number on the state lookup still matters.

How We Built This

The base is the Department of Insurance Bail Report for County Clerk, all counties, bail agent report.1 It lists name, license number, business address, city, ZIP and county. We count each license once, using the county the state gives. We group agents into offices by matching the street number, street name and ZIP. Company names come from the state's list of licensed agencies and from public business listings. You can check any agent yourself with the agent lookup.

Fast Answers

How many bail agents are in California?

2,029 individual bail agents were active on the state list on October 26, 2026. The state's own page says approximately 2,300 bail agents and organizations in total.4

Can a bail agent work in a county that has no agent address?

An agent's address on the state list is only a business address. It does not limit where they work, so people in small counties often use an agent from a nearby one. Ask when you call.

May I use these numbers?

Yes. Please link back to this page and name the California Department of Insurance as the source of the raw list.
